A New Chapter for Frankincense: Blending Tradition with Innovation

For many of us, frankincense was our first essential oil experience—and for good reason. Revered for centuries as the “King of Oils,” frankincense is powerful, grounding, and versatile. From spiritual rituals to modern science, it has remained a symbol of resilience and healing.

Frankincense: The Umbrella Oil

Frankincense is often described as a Swiss Army knife of essential oils, useful for so many aspects of wellness. But one of the best metaphors shared at convention was calling frankincense an umbrella.
  • Protective force — like an umbrella, it shields and supports the body in countless ways.
  • Unifying influence — it brings together wellness on multiple levels, bridging mind, body, and spirit.
This image is fitting because frankincense isn’t just a single-purpose oil—it’s foundational, covering areas like cellular health, immunity, emotional balance, and even skin vitality.

The Long-Awaited Extension: Oil + Resin

After years of anticipation, doTERRA announced a groundbreaking step forward: a new frankincense complex that marries the essential oil with the resin itself.
This pairing unlocks the best of both worlds:
  • Antioxidant support
  • Healthy inflammatory response
  • Normal cellular function
It’s the next level of frankincense—moving from good, to better, to extraordinary.

Too often, we accept feeling tired, stressed, or run down as just part of life. But that’s not normal—that’s common.
With frankincense, our new normal can look very different:
  • Normal is cellular function supported daily.
  • Normal is resilience instead of fatigue.
  • Normal is wellness powered by essential oils.

Frankincense Meets Naio Wood

doTERRA  introduced a new product pairing frankincense with Naio wood (Myoporum sandwicense), an endemic Hawaiian tree sometimes called False Sandalwood.

The Science Behind NAio Wood

The main chemical constituent of Naio wood (Myoporum sandwicense) is alpha-bisabolol, a monocyclic sesquiterpene best known from German chamomile, where it was first identified. In chamomile, alpha-bisabolol makes up about 30% of the oil.
In contrast, Nio wood contains an impressive 58% alpha-bisabolol, plus another 22% alpha-bisabolol oxide B. That means nearly 80% of Naio’s chemistry is made up of bisabolol compounds, making it one of the most concentrated natural sources discovered.

Why Alpha-Bisabolol Matters

Alpha-bisabolol has been studied extensively and used in both traditional wellness practices and modern formulations. Here’s why it stands out:
  • Soothes skin irritations → Helps calm redness and sensitivity.
  • Restores balance → Supports the skin’s natural repair process.
  • Improves appearance → Reduces the look of imperfections and promotes even tone.
  • Brightening effect → Research suggests alpha-bisabolol can have a gentle skin-lightening property, contributing to a more radiant complexion.
While the chemistry may feel complex, the takeaway is simple: Nio wood is one of the richest natural sources of alpha-bisabolol, which is why it delivers such profound skin-soothing and restorative benefits when used topically.

When combined with frankincense, the synergy is remarkable:
  • Frankincense offers broad cellular and immune support.
  • Naio enhances skin health, calms irritations, and adds grounding aroma.
  • Together, they create a powerful new tool for daily wellness.
What makes these innovations so special is that they honor both tradition and science. Frankincense has always been sacred and powerful—but by combining the oil, the resin, and now Nio wood, doTERRA is writing the next chapter in how we use and benefit from this ancient gift.

This isn’t just about a new product—it’s about reimagining what normal wellness can look like.
✨ The King of Oils just got a royal family extension. And for those who love frankincense, the best is still ahead.
